The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has introduced a new visa policy aimed at simplifying entry for Indonesian citizens into the European Union. Effective immediately, Indonesians visiting the EU for a second time will now qualify for a multi-entry Schengen visa. The announcement was made during a press conference held jointly with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Berlaymont Building in Brussels. Von der Leyen highlighted that the policy is not only intended to facilitate travel but also to strengthen long-term connections between Indonesia and the EU, particularly in areas such as education, investment, and social exchanges.
This visa policy falls under the people-to-people connections pillar of the EU-Indonesia strategic partnership, emphasizing the importance of building bridges between the two nations. President Prabowo welcomed the deepening of ties between the EU and Indonesia, emphasizing the significance of trust and shared values in fostering long-term relationships. He expressed Indonesia’s view of Europe as a key player in global stability and a partner in various aspects of modern life, beyond just trade and economics.
Prabowo underlined the partnership’s focus on values, solidarity, and a joint vision for the future, affirming Indonesia’s desire to see a stronger Europe and to work closely with the EU. He expressed optimism about finalizing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) soon and joked about holding the signing ceremony in Brussels for a compelling reason to return to the city. With the implementation of the new visa policy and deepening economic cooperation, Indonesia and the European Union are embarking on a new phase in their relationship, characterized by increased openness, strategic collaboration, and mutual benefits for both citizens.
