Indonesia’s National Children’s Day holds significant importance beyond just a yearly celebration. President Prabowo Subianto aims to utilize this occasion as a driving force for tangible actions to secure the future of the nation’s children. Through the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), Dedek Prayudi, Senior Expert, highlighted three key flagship programs introduced by the government to directly impact children’s welfare. These programs include Nutritious Free Meals (MBG), Free Health Checkups (CKG), and School Revitalization.
MBG, also known as Makan Bergizi Gratis, focuses on providing more than just meals to children. It ensures they receive essential daily nutrition, especially considering that 60% of school-aged children attend school without having breakfast. The lack of breakfast not only affects their focus and energy levels but also contributes to iron deficiency anemia, which can result in a drop in IQ points. The aim of MBG is to deliver vital nutrients like iron to support children’s growth and development.
In addition to MBG, the government is also implementing Free Health Checkups for students, covering various health aspects such as height, weight, vision, hearing, tuberculosis, and mental health. This initiative aligns with the constitutional mandate under Article 28(H) of the 1945 Constitution, ensuring the right to health for all citizens, including children. By offering preventive care through CKG, the government aims to protect public health and detect potential health issues before they escalate into diseases.
Furthermore, the School Revitalization Program has been launched to renovate 11,440 schools across Indonesia, starting in early 2025. This program targets both public and private schools at all educational levels in remote, underdeveloped, and densely populated urban areas lacking basic learning facilities. With an allocated budget of approximately Rp 20 trillion, President Prabowo addresses the urgent need to address the alarming structural damage in schools nationwide.
The School Revitalization Program prioritizes schools with the most severe damages, with many schools lacking basic facilities like proper toilets. This situation is particularly challenging for girls who may have to withhold urine for extended periods due to the lack of appropriate facilities. The focus is not only on safety but also on providing a dignified and healthy learning environment for all students. The government’s commitment to these initiatives underscores its dedication to ensuring the well-being and future of Indonesia’s children.
